The Mustangs were propelled by a hot start as they defeated the Midwest A’s 4-3 in the season opener of their tenth-anniversary season.
Saint Joseph took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Corey Cowan and Brady Garrison each hit run-scoring singles as the Mustangs took a 3-0 lead.
St. Joe surrendered two runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning as Midwest tied the game.
The matchup turned into a pitchers duel as Mustang’s starter Joseph Heitpas settled in and did not another allow a run for the duration of his outing.
In the fifth inning Aaron Dees earned a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a balk and came home on a wild pitch to give the St. Joe the pivotal fourth run.
Mustangs escaped with the win as fans were treated to a Mosaic LifeCare Fireworks Spectacular to end the evening.
Corey Cowan went 1-3 with a RBI, a walk, and scored a run.
Brady Garrison went 1-3 with a RBI and scored a run
Zach Purdue went 1-1 with a single and a walk.
Pitcher Joseph Heitpas earned a win in his first start with the Mustangs. Heitpas pitched five innings with one earned run and seven strikeouts.
St. Joe native Johnny Coy earns his first win as Mustang’s manager.
The Mustangs opened the season in front of a packed crowd at Phil Welch stadium with an attendance of 4,372.
St. Joe is 6-4 against the A’s in the last 10 matchups dating back to the 2016 season.
The Mustangs are 9-0 in season opening games dating back to the 2010 season.
