One day removed from signing his contract with the St. Joseph Mustangs, Jake Jones’ name will forever be etched in Mustangs’ history.
Jake Jones took the mound in game two of Friday night’s doubleheader against the Branson Nationals and threw one for the record books.
“I usually don’t try to think about that kind of stuff. Probably around the fifth or sixth inning, I kind of knew what was going on,” Jones said. “I tried to keep it out of my head as much as I could.”
Jones threw the third no hitter in the history of the St. Joseph Mustangs Friday night.
After signing his contract and joining the team on Thursday, the former Missouri Western State University Griffon discovered he would get the nod in game two on Friday night.
“Coach Johnson talked me into it,” Jones said. “He wanted me to sign and he had me throw a bullpen session and decided to take me on.”
Jones went seven innings (complete game) walked one and struck out three.
He joins Adam Maddox and current Mustangs’ bullpen coach Cody Cunningham as the only pitchers to throw a no hitter in Mustangs’ history.
