The St. Joseph Mustangs defeated the Branson Nationals Friday night. The offense came alive in game one scoring 18 runs in the seven inning game. In game two though, the story was Jake Jones throwing the third no-hitter in Mustangs’ history.

The Mustangs trailed the Nationals through the first three innings. The Nationals scored two runs in the first to take the 2-0 lead. The Mustangs answered with three runs in the top of the fourth. After Ryan Abernathy singled to lead off the inning, Mike Sherburne hit a RBI double to score Abernathy. Sherburne eventually scored on a throwing error to make it 2-2. Joe Koerper scored on another error to give the Mustangs the lead, 3-2.

Branson scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie it back up, 3-3. The Mustangs’ offensive explosion began in the top of the fifth inning. St. Joseph plated eight runs in the inning to make it 11-3. The Mustangs extended the lead to 12-3 in the top of the sixth and scored six more runs in the seventh to make it 18-3.

Blake Kolons started for the Mustangs. He went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs while striking out two. Redmond Floyd went 1 2/3 innings did not allow a hit and struck out three to earn the win. Tanner Smith finished the game for the Mustangs allowing three runs on two hits while striking out two.

In game two, the Mustangs scored three runs and that was enough run support for Jake Jones. Jones threw the third no-hitter in Mustangs’ history Friday night. Jones didn’t allow a base runner for 5 2/3 innings. Jones went seven innings walking one and striking out three for the no-hitter.  The Missouri Western righty signed with the Mustangs on Thursday.
