With the stadium filled with the colors green and white, a former Northwest Missouri State pitcher took the mound and put on a show Saturday night.
It was Northwest Missouri State Night at Phil Welch Stadium and former Northwest pitcher Ryker Fox started for the Mustangs. The lefty pitched a scoreless 6 1/3 innings in front of a Mustangs’ record crowd 4,427. Fox picked up his fifth victory of the season and lowered his ERA to 0.27.
Before Fox’s incredible outing, the evening began with tailgating hosted by the Northwest Alumni Association.
The Northwest Alumni Association began preparations for the night several hours before first pitch and Mustang and Northwest fans enjoyed the pre-game events.
Four current Mustangs and former Northwest baseball players made a special visit to the tailgating area. Ryan Abernathy, Brandon Huske, Jon Pomatto, and Tanner Smith signed autographs for fans.
Along with the meet and greet with the Mustangs’ players, the Bearcat Steppers made a special visit to Phil Welch and performed two routines during the game.
“This is really turning into a Northwest Missouri State summer tradition for our alumni, fans, faculty, staff and students,” Bob Machovsky, director of alumni relations and annual giving, said. “We love the St. Joe community and we like to be here as much as possible. This is our opportunity to come down and root on a local team and come together and celebrate the summer.”
Bearcat women’s basketball coach Michael Smith represented Northwest for the ceremonial first pitch.
The Mustangs wore green jerseys in honor of Northwest Night and fans were able to bid on the jerseys throughout the night.
To cap the night off, the record crowd enjoyed the Heartland Health Firework Spectacular.
