McDonald, Figueroa Go Yard as Mustangs Thump A's

Evan McDonald finished with four hits during his first game back in the lineup in a week.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Mustangs mustered 18 hits against the struggling Clarinda A’s pitching staff as they put up a dozen runs in the first four innings at Phil Welch Stadium en route to a 16-7 win Friday night.

In his first appearance in four games, shortstop Evan McDonald had a big night with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first, and four consecutive base hits in six plate appearances.

McDonald scored four times and leads the Mustangs in batting average hitting .432.

Following his walk off RBI single against the Sedalia Bombers on Thursday night, right fielder Jeremiah Figueroa hit a two-run homer to left field in his final plate appearance. Figueroa finished 2-4 with a walk, two RBI, and a heads-up double play on a diving catch in right field in the top of the fifth.

Clarinda’s lineup consisted of four players leading the MINK in batting average. The A’s came into Friday night’s matchup with a team batting average of .282 with 64 extra base hits. The Mustangs pitching staff held Clardina to six hits with only one extra base knock.

Left fielder Tyler Cox went 2-5 scoring two runs and hitting his third double of the year in the eighth inning.

Taking a 14 run lead into the top of the eighth, St. Joe gave up five runs on three hits and an error.

Right-handed pitcher Miles Kilgore earned the win throwing seven and two-thirds innings striking out four batters on five runs, four earned runs, five hits, three walks, and a hit batter.

Right-handed pitcher Matt Diaz came in to slam the door after the A’s batted around Kilgore in the eighth, striking out center fielder Travis Able to end the inning. Diaz pitched into the ninth going an inning and a third, with two earned runs on a base-hit, two walks, and two strikeouts.

The Mustangs improve to 22-8 with a 16-8 record in the MINK. St. Joe is sitting in first place with a half-game lead over the Sedalia Bombers.

Saturday night St. Joseph will take on the Ban Johnson All-Stars during fireworks night at Phil Welch Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
