SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. – On Wednesday night at Phil Welch Stadium the St. Joseph Mustangs capitalized on a couple of key walks and doubles to rout Natural Baseball Academy 7-3.

Southpaw Jake Van Vacter earned the win throwing 3.1 innings with an earned run, three hits, and five strikeouts. Van Vacter’s knuckleball danced as he came in for relief in the fifth inning after starting pitcher Jeremiah Figueroa loaded the bases four times on 11 walks.

St. Joe scored runs consecutively in the third, fourth, and fifth innings on two doubles, two walks, three stolen bases, and seven base-hits

The Mustangs scored seven runs on 11 hits holding Natural Baseball Academy to three runs on four hits.

Hitting his third double of the year, Mustangs’ second baseman Brett Marr scored two runs on two hits with an RBI on five at-bats.

In the ninth inning right handed pitcher Steve D’Amico recorded two strikeouts to give him 19 on the season.

Starting in centerfield, Dade Wheeler made a couple of dazzling grabs while the entire Mustangs’ defense came up big for St. Joe’s pitchers. Wheeler hit his second extra base hit of the season with an RBI double in the fifth inning to score catcher Jon Zuptich.

Zuptich had a productive day at the plate going 1-2 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and two walks.

The Mustangs remain undefeated in non-MINK action and improve to 27-11 with an 18-11 record in the MINK North. Tomorrow night St. Joe will take on the Kansas City Monarchs in more non-league play at Phil Welch Stadium with first pitch at 7 p.m.
