Michael Lydon-Lorson won his third game of the season throwing eight innings in consecutive starts.
SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. – The St. Joseph Mustangs defeated the Chillicothe Mudcats 8-2 on Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium taking the season series 4-2 in the final weeks before the MINK League post season.
Right-handed pitcher Michael Lydon-Lorson continued to pitch well on the season earning his third win with eight innings pitched, two runs, one earned run, 10 hits, five strikeouts and a walk. Lydon-Lorson entered Wednesday night with a .740 walks and hits per inning ratio, and a 2.54 earned run average in 35 and one-third innings pitched for the Mustangs on the year.
The Chillicothe Mudcats started the night out half a game back of St. Joe sitting at third place in the MINK North. With the win the Mustangs improve to one and half games ahead of the Mudcats and half game out of first place behind the Sedalia Bombers.
St. Joe extends its winning streak to five, with all five winnings coming in the last three days.
The Mudcats were flustered defensively committing four errors allowing the Mustangs to score three unearned runs.
The Mustangs bats beat up on Mudcats’ starter Zach Leban who entered the night with a stellar 1.68 earned run average, .185 opponents’ batting average, and nine runs surrendered on the year. However, Leban left St. Joseph with the loss on six runs, three earned runs, seven hits, six strikeouts and two walks.
Coming alive with 11 hits, St. Joe’s offense had three big innings three runs in the third, three runs in the fifth and two runs in the seventh inning.
In the third inning, Mustangs’ left fielder Orencio Fisher grounded a fielder’s choice with a throwing error by Mudcats’ second baseman Dalton Rook to dive in right fielder Jeremiah Figueroa and shortstop Matt Wollnik. Fisher then manufactured a run by stealing third base and forcing Mudcats’ catcher John Remick to throw the ball into right field.
Striking again in the fifth inning, Mustangs’ designated hitter Kyle Uhrich belted his seventh homerun of the year as a two-run shot to left field to drive in team leading RBIs no. 38 and 39. Uhrich finished the night 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Later in the bottom of the fifth, St. Joseph first baseman Louis Melé reached first base on an error by Mudcats’ shortstop Dalton Schumer. Melé would come in to score on another error by Rook to put the Mustangs up 6-0 on Chillicothe.
In the seventh inning, St. Joseph put up two more on four hits with RBI singles by catcher Brady Anderson and Wollnik.
Wollnik completed the evening and continued his hot steak going 2-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
Anderson has a solid night with three hits on four at-bats and an RBI.
The Mustangs flashed leather on the defensive side of the ball in the fourth inning when Lydon-Lorson pitched himself into a two out jam. With runners on second and third base Fisher stormed in from center field to make a diving catch to end the inning and the Chillicothe rally.
St. Joseph improves to 35-14 on the year with a 26-13 record in the MINK North. The Mudcats fall to 29-16 with a 25-15 record in the MINK North, and currently are from the outside looking in for hopes of a MINK League title.
Tomorrow night the Mustangs play their final regular season game at home against the fourth place division rival Clarinda A’s. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. during Christmas in July at the ballpark with Mosaic Life Care fireworks after the game.
