Mustangs squeak out a victory at home

07/12/2017 8:50 PM -

The Mustangs (27-10, 21-9 MINK) offense found enough drive to launch themselves into a 2-1 victory over the Clarinda A’s (17-18, 12-17 MINK).

The Mustangs found ground in the second inning with one out as Jerimiah Figueroa doubled. Figueroa further advanced to third following a flyout to right field by Derek Hussey, and scored following a single by Joshua Lincoln. One at bat later Easton Fortuna was caught for out number three, ending the inning with a 1-0 Mustang lead.

Starting pitcher Steve D’Amico stood solid supporting the early offensive drive before giving up one run with two outs in the top of the sixth. One inning later, the Mustangs broke the 1-1 tie.

The game remained scoreless until the 7th when Hussey doubled on a 1-0 count, advancing to third following a Lincoln single. Hussey advanced to third, before scoring on an error by Clarinda’s third baseman with no outs.

Lincoln stole second, before Easton Fortuna was caught for out number one. Matt Wollnik was caught for a putout stealing second, before Brady Anderson was caught on a putout ending the inning which helped launch the Mustangs to victory.

D’Amico continued his dominance in the top of the eighth, but was pulled to allow Nikko Pablo to close the game. D’Amico finished allowing five hits, striking out four.

Pablo allowed one hit, walking one to base. Following a short visit with Matt Johnson, he made adjustment to his command heading into the final out. He has not allowed one run in his 12 appearances this season.

The Jefferson City Renegades arrive to Phil Welch Stadium for the first time tomorrow night as Joshua Monson (3-1, 1.85 ERA) takes mound for the Mustangs.

The night will be highlighted by a splash day featuring water balloons and water soaker areas around the stadium. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
