Mustangs get revenge in 8-0 victory

07/14/2017 9:50 PM -

A solid showing by starting pitcher Osvaldo Raya combined with hits by eight of eleven batters launched the Mustangs (28-11, 22-10 MINK) into a 8-0 victory over the Jefferson City Renegades (16-20, 13-20 MINK).

The Mustangs found early momentum as the Renegades walked Easton Fortuna with one out in the bottom of the first. Drew Standifer doubled in the next at-bat to bring Fortuna home. Two consecutive putouts left Standifer stranded in scoring position as the Mustangs led 1-0.

Rhythm continued in the bottom of the third as Brody Santilli led off with a single to right field. Santilli stole to second with one out, before the Renegades walked Standifer. Soon after, the duo stole together leaving runners on second and third. Colton Pogue was walked to load the bases.

As the Renegades walked Erasmo Gonzalez bringing in Santilli. Jeremiah Figueroa advanced on yet another walk to bring in Standifer, before Joshua Lincoln singled to left field bringing in Pogue. The inning came to an end with a 4-0 Mustang lead.

A leadoff single to center field by Pogue in the bottom of the fifth sparked another scoring run. Pogue stole to second, before Williams singled to bring him in with no outs.

WIlliams was caught stealing to second for out number one. Gonzalez and Figueroa advanced to base after, but no more runs were seen before the end of the inning. Gonzalez was caught for an out following Figueroa’s single. Lincoln was caught on a putout to end the inning with a 5-0 Mustangs lead.

Raya exited the game following seven innings only allowing just four hits while recording 10 strikeouts. His start lowered his ERA to 2.60 in MINK play, earning his fourth win.

The trend of every other inning offense continued as bats awoke in the bottom of the seventh. Gonzalez opened with a single to right field. He advanced to second following a single by Figueroa. Lincoln singled, bringing the two into scoring position with no outs.

A flyout to right field by Derek Hussey recorded out number one. Santilli advanced to first on a walk bringing Gonzalez in. A sacrifice fly by Matt Wollnik  advanced Lincoln to third scoring Figueroa.

Santilli stole to second before Standifer advanced to first on a walk. The two remained in that position as Pogue hit a fly out to center field for out number three giving the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.

Nikko Pablo pitched the top of the eighth to all three outs striking out one in his 13th appearance of the season. His 0.00 ERA still stands.

Derek Hussey hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth bringing in Williams, extending the Mustangs lead to 8-0. Jake Purl closed the game for the Mustangs, allowing one hit striking out one to secure the Mustang victory.

Jake VanVacter (1-3 , 5.06 ERA) takes mound for the Mustangs in the series finale Saturday night.
