When Mason Janvrin stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth the Mustangs had not held a lead all night. That changed with the crack of the bat as the centerfielder deposited a line drive into left field sending Terrence Spurlin and Brody Santilli across home plate securing a 5-4 victory over Nevada Griffons.
The walk off single capped off a stellar final four innings for the Mustangs.
Trailing by three runs in the fifth inning, St. Joe began to battle back. Janvrin sped around the bases for an inning-opening triple. Shortstop Colton Pogue blasted a double down the left field line to score Janvrin and get the Mustangs on the board.
Down 5-2 in the eighth, Janvrin earned his way onto the base path with a walk. The son of an Olympic decathlete, he showed off his speed again stealing second and third. Janvrin raced home on a throwing error by the Griffons to pull St. Joe within one and set up the big ninth inning.
With the win, Mustangs fans scored with Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Fridays. The ticket stubs to Friday’s game are good for a 20¢ Fuel Saver when presented at St. Joe Hy-Vee within seven days.
Mason Janvrin went 2-4 with a triple, a single, two RBIs, a run and two stolen bases.
