Another night, another dominant pitching performance by a Mustangs pitcher. Having allowed just two runs in as many games this week, Saint Joseph turned to Brennon Covington and he did not disappoint. Covington led the Mustangs to a 4-1 win over the Kansas City Monarchs.
The Missouri Southern State product threw six innings and collected 14 strikeouts. He left no Monarchs player unscathed recording at least one strikeout against each batter in the lineup.
At the plate St. Joe provided the offense to back up the dazzling performance on the mound. The Mustangs got on the board in the third inning when right fielder Zachary Smith slapped a single to left field to score Mason Janvrin.
A new demographic of Mustang fans took over the ballpark for Bark in the Park night. The four-legged friends took in the win while a representative put up a valiant effort in the mascot race.
The heart of the lineup came through for St. Joe in the fifth inning. Two straight singles put a runner in scoring position for shortstop Josh Lincoln who belted a single through the infield. Two batters later Brady Garrison singled to right field, bringing Lincoln home, and extending the Mustang’s lead to four.
Fans at the game scored with Hy-Vee Fuel Saver Fridays. The winning ticket stubs are good for a 20¢ Fuel Saver when presented at St. Joe Hy-Vee within seven days.
Zachary Smith went 3-4 with an RBI.
