With a crack of the bat Zachary Smith sent a baseball flying through the night sky and onto the Hy-Vee party deck at Phil Welch stadium. The seventh-inning bomb extended the Mustangs lead to three runs.
Saint Joseph fans had reason to celebrate on Tuesday night as the Mustangs defeated the first place Sedalia Bombers 6-4.
The Mustangs are proud to partner with the Noyes Home for Children. Fans were allowed free admission with a donation to the home. For more information or to make a donation visit noyeshome.org
Down 2-0 in the first St. Joe was able to cut the lead in half . Mason Janvrin and Colton Eremian hit back-to-back singles to get into scoring position. An Alex Phillips groundout was enough to score Janvrin.
Trailing by a run in the third, Eremian hit sharp line drive to left field that froze the Bomber’s Chris Lewis. The ball soared over the leaping outfielder and rolled to the warning track. The Shortstop got on his horse and slid into third base with a triple to begin the inning.
Eremian got a little help from the opponent as he crossed the plate on a passed ball to tie the game.
The Mustangs led 4-2 when Smith stepped to the plate in the seventh. Alex Phillips followed up the homerun with a double to centerfield. Some erratic pitching allowed the designated hitter to cross the plate as St. Joe took a four-run lead on the way to victory.
Sedalia attempted a late comeback scoring two runs in the eighth, but Preston Bailey came on in relief and stifled the rally. The closer collected three strikeouts in 1 and 2/3 innings pitched.
Zachary Smith went 2-4 with three runs, one RBI and three stolen bases.
Colton Eremian went 2-5 with a triple and a run scored.
Mason Janvrin went 2-5 with a run scored.
The Mustangs have six different batters who have hit a homerun this season tied for first in the MINK league.
With the win the Mustangs are just one and a half game behind Sedalia for first place in the league.
St. Joe will be back at Phil Welch 7 p.m. Wednesday for a matchup against the Chillicothe Mudcats. Tomorrow the Mustangs are extending FREE General Admission to all fans, with a monetary donation to the Noyes Home in hopes of raising even more money.
