Multiple Home Runs the story as the Mustangs take both games

06/21/2018 10:32 PM -

The Mustangs showed off their home run power on Thursday night. Saint. Joseph launched baseballs to all corners of the stadium as it swept a double-header matchup against the Ozark Generals 5-3 and 12-5, respectively.

Game one:

Stepping to the plate in the first inning Alex Phillips began act one of his dominant offensive display. The first baseman sent a baseball to the longest part of the field, clearing the 400-foot sign in straightaway-center.

Phillips connected on his fifth-home run of the season as the Mustangs downed the Generals 5-3 in the opening game of the double header.

Building off of Phillip’s bomb, the Mustangs kept the rally going. Aaron Dees walked to the plate with the bases loaded. The left fielder smoked a line drive into the right field corner for a bases-clearing double, giving the Mustangs a four-run lead.

Leading by a run in the sixth, Brody Santilli crushed a line drive that could not be handled by the General’s shortstop Xavier De Leon. Daniel Covert took advantage, scoring from second.

Mighty Mustangs:

Joshua Lincoln went 2-4 with two singles.

Alex Phillips went 2-3 with a homerun.

Daniel Covert went 2-2 with two runs scored.

Game two:

The Mustangs faithful rose to their feet at the familiar sound of Phillip’s bat connecting with the ball. There was no doubt about it the first baseman’s closing act was a replica of his opening.  He smacked his second home run of the night onto the right-field porch. The hit was contagious.

Before fans had a chance to sit down Terrence Spurlin blasted a ball over the left field fence, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

The back-to-back homeruns in the seventh inning propelled the Mustangs past the Generals 8-4 in game two of the double header.

Trailing by a run in the third inning, Zachary Smith got the Mustangs on a board with a double to deep-center field to score Mason Janvrin.

Smith stole third and Phillips slapped a single to left field bringing the centerfielder home.

Tied at three in the sixth, Janvrin sent the baseball rising into the pitch-black sky.

With an assist from the stadium lights illuminating Phil Welch, General’s center fielder Parker Stahlman lost sight of the ball and stumbled to the ground allowing the baseball to one hop the wall as Janvrin coasted into second.

The sixth-inning blunder allowed Jordan Maxson to cross the plate giving the Mustangs a one run lead.

Not comfortable with the six-run lead generated by the big seventh inning, Spurlin returned to the plate and crushed another home run to left field. It was his second of the game and the fourth of the night for St. Joe.

Mighty Mustangs:

Alex Phillips went 2-3 with a homerun and two RBI

Terrence Spurlin went 2-5 with two homeruns and three RBI

Colton Eremian went 2-4 with three RBI
