Mustangs top A's in season opener

05/30/2019 8:19 AM -

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)— Behind a seven-run sixth inning, the St. Joseph Mustangs won their season opener, 11-4, Wednesday night at Phil Welch Stadium against the Midwest A's.

The Mustangs scored all of their runs in two frames—four in the fifth and seven in the sixth inning.

"I've been waiting a long time for this night and to get the season going," Mustangs manager Johnny Coy said.

The Mustangs had to play catchup in the early going of the contest. The A's struck first with three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead, but the Mustangs took the lead in the fifth, 4-3.

"First at bat, they were a little nervous, trying to do too much and get the crowd really excited and once they relaxed and had fun playing baseball, we hit the ball really well," Coy said.

Midwest tied the game up at four in the top of the sixth, but the Mustangs exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

First baseman Karl Koerper led the way for the Mustangs—going 1-for-4 with a double and 4 RBI. Jordan Maxson added in three hits and three RBI in the victory.

Colton Kenagy took the hill for the Mustangs—going five innings, allowing four runs on two hits and six walks, while striking out eight.

The Mustangs have a day off on Thursday, but will host FanFest at the St. Joseph Hy-Vee Thursday evening from 5:30-7.

The Mustangs get back on the field Friday night at Phil Welch Stadium in M.I.N.K. League play against the Clarinda A's.
