Mustangs run-rule Clarinda in league opener

05/31/2019 11:30 PM -

(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)— Mahlyk Davis was dealing on the mound for the St. Joseph Mustangs as he allowed no runs in four innings of work en route to a 13-3 victory over the visiting Clarinda A’s.

Due to MINK conference rules, the contest was ended in the seventh inning due to a run rule.

After a quiet top of the first inning by Clarinda, St. Joseph (2-0) wasted no time putting runs on the scoreboard. Outfielder Dylan Ketch stepped into the batter’s box with one away and gave the Mustangs’ their first base runner of the contest. Ketch was advanced on the next at bat after second baseman Drew Beazley drew a walk. As first baseman Kyle Koerper struck out swinging to give St. Joseph its second out, catcher Jordan Maxson slapped a triple down to deep right center, scoring Ketch and Beazley. Like Maxson, shortstop Jack Wagner tripled, crossing the final run of the inning. The Mustangs notched three runs on the hits while stranding a runner to take an early 3-0 lead over the A’s.

Following a scoreless second by both squads, St. Joseph added two more runs in the home-half of the third and increased its lead to 5-0. Ketch led off the inning by reaching base on a hit by pitch and was batted around following a triple hit by Beazley. Maxson grounded out next, scoring Beazley.

In his last full inning of work, Davis forced Clarinda into a three-up, three-down inning in the top of the fourth. Not letting off the gas pedal, St. Joseph scored four more insurance runs to bring its lead to a commanding 9-0.

In the fifth, the A’s scored two runs to claw back at the Mustang lead and bring the score to 9-2. The Mustangs answered back in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs of their own to extend the lead back to 11-2.

Both squads added a single run to the scoreboard in the sixth to increase the score to 10-3. Entering the seventh, the Mustangs needed just one more run to extend their lead to a 10-run advantage and end the game. After forcing the A’s into another three-up, three down inning, Jackson Dierenfeldt led off the home-half with a single. Dierenfeldt advanced to second on one-out walk by Ketch and was batted in on the next at bat by Beazley.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. to finish off their season opening home stand against the Chillicothe Mudcats. Mosaic Life Care post-game fireworks are scheduled after the conclusion of the contest.
