The Mustangs played a close game today when the Jefferson City Renegades came to Phil Welsh Stadium, but they pulled out with an outstanding 3-2 win.
The game started with a pitcher's duel in the first two innings, where Mustangs pitcher Denton Biller and Renegades pitcher Sam Wyrick would go steady in the first two innings, giving up limited hits and pitches.
This would end when the Mustangs broke through the Renegade's defense, as Frank Gall singled to center and stole second and third base. Gall would cross home plate as center fielder Darius Freeman would rip a single to center field and start the Mustangs off with a lead.
All was going well for the Mustangs until the fifth inning. With two out in the top of the fifth, Braden Hemmer popped up with a routine fly ball, but a miscommunication between center fielder Freeman and right fielder Gall resulted in a dropped ball. The Renegades ran on contact with two outs, scoring the runners on second and third.
It looked grim for the Mustangs until the bottom of the sixth when Jayden Little reached on a fielder's choice and was driven in by Jackson Glueck, who tied the game at 2-2.
The Mustangs wouldn't have to wait as long as in the seventh's bottom. The inning would start with Tanner Schmidt hitting a single, followed by him stealing second base. Gall would walk, and Noah Bodenhaus would be hit by a pitch, loading the bases.
Schmidt would be called out in a fielder's choice as Freeman would reach first, reloading the bases. Jorden Black would put the Mustangs in the lead as he would hit a sacrifice fly and drive home Gall to have the Mustangs lead 3-2.
The following two innings would be the reign of the Mustangs as they would take revenge on the Renegades for last season's shutout in a victory to lead the MINK League.
Your Mustangs player of the game is pitcher Jace Johnson. Jace recorded five strikeouts over three innings pitched!
The Mustangs will be on the road for their first away game, facing the Carroll Merchants at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow in Merchant Park!
