St. Joseph, Mo. (July 15, 2021) - The Mustangs scored just five runs in the game on Thursday -- all of which came in the first frame -- but wouldn’t need any more in the matchup with the Mudcats.
The Mustangs beat the Mudcats 5-3 on Thursday, due in part to Mustangs starting pitcher Matt Fred. Fred went the whole nine innings, allowing just six hits and three runs in the affair. Fred was awarded Player of the Game honors due to his dominance over Chillicothe.
In the first inning, the Mustangs loaded the bases on two walks and a single with just one out. Designated hitter, Ike Book, came to the plate and knocked in two runs on single and then an error by the Mudcats’ center fielder.
Two wildpitches in the first inning and a fielder’s choice brought home the Mustangs’ final three runs of the game.
The Mudcats were able to scrape across three runs in the third inning on back-to-back singles. These three runs made it a two-run ball game, but both teams went quietly after that.
The game went six-straight scoreless innings following the Mudcats’ top of the third inning, and the Mustangs were able to hold onto their big first-inning lead.
