Dan Gerson founded the St. Joseph Mustangs organization, selling the team recently to Ky Turner. Gerson owned the team for 14 years, overseeing 7 MINK League Championships during that time. Gerson had a heavy hand in the teams success off the field as well.
“When we had any question about doing something at the stadium, Dan would always ask one thing; Is it good for the fans? Dan always had a focus on the community. He wanted to embrace the city just as the city had embraced the team,” said Turner.
The Mustangs are continuing Gerson’s legacy with a new program, the Founders Seats. The Mustangs will give away Dan’s front row seats, behind home plate, throughout the season.
“These seats have been Dan’s since he bought the team. Dan continues to have those seats, but he wanted to do something good to the community in some way, after his ownership had ended. This was his idea, even though he never likes to take claim for his generosity, and more than likely he will joke about having to buy a ticket now. Dan loves St. Joseph, and means it when he says he considers it his second home town.” said Turner.
The team is now taking nominations for families or groups to sit in the four reserved seats in the newly named Founders Seats. There are no parameters for nominations; it can be a neighbor, a coach of a youth baseball team, or a family that may not be able to afford to visit a game. It can be a random act of kindness, a teacher, nurse, or barista at your local coffee shop. Nominations can be made by contacting the team through social media, or calling the front office at 816.279.STJO(7856). When nominating the family, please be sure to include any reason as to why you are making the nomination, as well as any contact information. Once selected, the nominated family will be notified and will pick a date to visit.
