The St. Joseph Mustangs underwent a 10-2 defeat at the hands of the Sedalia Bombers Saturday night. With the loss, St. Joe now owns a 6-3 overall record and a 5-3 league play total.
On a cool, damp night at Phil Welch Stadium, the Mustangs struggled to fire up the offense. St. Joe recorded just one hit with runners in scoring position and went 0-for-6 with the bases loaded.
The Mustangs first scored in the fifth on a grounder by designated hitter Ike Book. Then, in the eighth, center fielder Brayden Luikart mashed a solo home run over the Yellow Frog Graphics Party Deck in right field. The long ball, Luikart’s first of the season, was also the first round-tripped at Phil Welch Stadium in 2023.
Right-hander Brandon Stone served as the Mustangs’ starting pitcher. He tossed four innings, taking the loss while accumulating six walks, two earned runs and eight strikeouts.
Sedalia added four more runs between the fifth and sixth against right-hander Ryker Curry. In the ninth, after Luikart’s blast pulled St. Joe within four, the Bombers pulled away with four runs. Right-hander Mason Holton finished out the game for the Mustangs, punching out seven in the final three innings.
The Mustangs now hit the road for three games. They’ll start in Jefferson City against the Renegades Sunday at 7 p.m. before visiting Clarinda for back-to-back meetings with the A’s.
