SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. -- Your St Joe Mustangs advance into the MINK League Championship after a 9-3 victory against the Carrol Merchants.
The Mustangs were led by Jeter Mauzey, who went 4-5 and drove in three RBIs. The Mustangs used four pitchers to earn today's victory.
The Mustangs started catching fire early after Denton Biller struck out two Merchants in the first. Darius Freeman and Mauzey put the Mustangs ahead early with a sacrifice fly and an RBI double to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
The Merchants earned one back after Biller hit a Merchant, making it a 2-1 Mustangs lead. The Merchants put two more runs on in the third inning with a triple and a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-3 Merchant lead.
Mauzey ties the game in the bottom of the third with an RBI single. Dom Felix gave the Mustangs the lead with a sacrifice fly, scoring Mauzey to lead 4-3 in the third.
Aron Harrington took the mound in the fourth and fended off the Merchants, earning a strikeout. The Mustangs supported Harrington with Carson Schrack hustling for a double and Freeman driving him home with a triple for a 5-3 lead.
The Mustangs extended the lead further in the fifth with an Easton Bruce sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-3.
The Mustangs put the game further out of reach in the sixth with another Mauzey RBI single and Mauzey himself scoring on a passed ball to extend the Mustangs lead 8-3.
The Mustangs back up Bronco Witt in the eighth inning as Felix grounds out to score Freeman and extend the Mustangs lead 9-3.
Jaren Guck ends the game in the ninth, facing three batters and earning a strikeout to send the Mustangs to the Championship to face the Clarinda A's.
The Mustangs hit the road to play the A's on Thursday and return home on Friday to face the A's in game two.
