Mustangs can't catch Clarinda

After a late-inning win against the Merchants on Sunday, the St Joe Mustangs faced the Clarinda A's to finish the road trip.

The A's got the better of the Mustangs in a 3-11 Mustangs loss. Looking to avenge their Friday loss, the Mustangs took to Clarinda Municipal Stadium to face the music.

In the first inning, starting pitcher Landon Reith took the mound. A's left fielder Khi Holiday singled and stole both second and third base to put himself in scoring position. A's shortstop Sean Bazmore singled to score Holiday for an early A's lead 0-1.

Reith got out of the first inning, giving up two hits and a run for minimal damage. Reith had runners on first and third in the second inning after two singles and steals. Reith got out of the inning after striking out A's second baseman Joey Caruso. In the third inning, Reith took the A's batters down 1-2-3.

The fourth inning was rough for Reith as A's left fielder Tyler Macon started on third. Macon scored after a single by A's third baseman Evan Smallwood. Smallwood advanced to second after A's right fielder Layth Holiday singled; K. Holiday reached first on an error by second baseman Carson Schmidt, scoring Smallwood. Caruso grounded out, scoring L. Holiday. Bazmore's triple scores K. Holiday for the second time to lead 0-5 in the fourth inning.

In the fifth, relief pitcher Bronco Witt had the bases loaded. Witt got out of the fifth scoreless after a strikeout and a clutch double play.

In the sixth, Michael Infranca had runners on second and third. Infranca struck out the next two batters to leave two A's on base in the sixth. Infranca returned in the seventh, where he struck out two more batters and watched a fly out to center fielder Trevor McCollum to retire the A's 1-2-3.

Relief pitcher Tanner Schmidt pitched in the eighth inning. Schmidt held the A's to a hit after earning a strikeout, groundout, and a flyout to keep the A's at five runs.

In the ninth inning, the Mustangs started their offense after third baseman Jordan Black and right fielder Jackson Glueck singled. Schmidt reached on a fielder's choice, putting Black out at third. Left fielder Darius Freeman walked to load the bases. McCollum grounded out to Smallwood for the second out, scoring Glueck. Schmidt scored on a passed ball to trail the A's 2-5.

Designated hitter Carson Schrack grounded out to Smallwood to end the game with the Mustangs losing 2-5.

The next Mustangs game will be at Phil Welch Stadium, where your St Joe Mustangs take on the Chillicothe Mudcats at 7:00 p.m.
