St. Joseph, Mo. (June 5, 2021) - The St. Joseph Mustangs fell to the Nevada Griffons 12-1 after two high-scoring innings near the halfway point.
The Mustangs started the opening frame with the lead following a double by Chase Spoonemore. St. Joseph earned one run on the double but could not muster up another run in the final six innings.
Mustangs’ starting pitcher Braden Barry pitched three solid innings before his command began to fluctuate in the fourth inning. Barry allowed four walks in Nevada’s five-run fourth inning. A deep home run off the bat of Nevada’s Alec Telles was the tipping point for Barry.
The Griffons added six more runs to their total in the fifth inning. The Mustangs struggled to find the zone again, walking three more batters and adding a balk.
The game did not go the full nine innings and instead finished after the Griffons pitched around a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh.
Regardless of the 12-1 score, 2,649 fans left Phil Welch happy following a post-game firework show. Northwest Missouri State University students, alumni and fans watched the Mustangs don Bearcat green in honor of the university on Saturday. NWMSU’s Bobby the Bearcat joined Rally in the stands for NWMSU Night at Phil Welch.
The Mustangs will travel to Joplin, Mo. for a two-game stint on Sunday to face off with the Joplin Outlaws. St. Joseph will host the KC Monarchs back at Phil Welch on Thursday, June 10, 2021, for Blippi Night.
