St. Joseph, Mo. (July 3, 2021) - The Mustangs cannot overcome a four-run seventh inning for the Chillicothe Mudcats in the first game of a holiday weekend homestand. St. Joseph fell to the Mudcats by a final score of 6-3 on Saturday evening.
The Mustangs opened the scoring on a bobble by the Mudcats second basemen, put in play by Cole Slibowski. Noah Bodenhausen and Brady Holden both picked up RBIs in the second inning of the game.
The Mustangs would hold this lead until the seventh inning when the Mudcats would score four unanswered runs in the seventh and then would add another two insurance runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach of the Mustangs.
Mustangs starting pitcher Drake Kanallakan held the Mudcats scoreless through six innings and would pitch into the seventh, but could not record an out and all four runs scored by the Mudcats in the seventh were his. Kanallakan’s final line was six strong innings, six hits, four runs and five strikeouts.
The final two innings of the game for quiet for the Mustangs, especially in the ninth, following Chillicothe’s two-run top of the frame. The Mudcats displayed quality defense in the latter innings to keep the Mustangs off the board and to secure their first victory at Phil Welch this season.
The Mustangs are back at Phil Welch on Sunday, July 4. The Mustangs will host holiday festivities from when the gates open until the post-game firework spectacular. Veterans and active military receive two free tickets to the Yellow Frog Party Deck (while tickets last) on Sunday.
